Extend Learning Beyond the Classroom

All adult students need 21st Century skills, which include computer competence, for employment, family, and citizenship goals, and, according to surveys conducted by OTAN from 2006 to 2010, more and more ESL students have home computers with as many as 70 to 80 percent of higher-level adult ESL students reporting having internet access. Thus, instructors can make available to students the chance to extend their language development outside the classroom at their own convenience, in their homes, school computer labs, and libraries, while increasing their computer skills at the same time. The presenter will lead workshop attendees in learning through demonstration how to use thee free sites -- Spelling City, ESL Video, and VoiceThread -- to create online exercises for students to practice listening, speaking, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and pronunciation.
